WASHINGTON - The Bush administration offered assurances Tuesday that Secretary of State Colin Powell's handshake with Taiwan's president did not change U.S. policy on China.Later:
Powell shook hands and exchanged pleasantries Monday with Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian in Panama City during a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Panamian independence.
Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing then requested Powell telephone him, which Powell did, a State Department spokesman said Tuesday.
China, highly sensitive to any sign of U.S. favor toward what it regards as the renegade province of Taiwan, responded by reiterating its opposition to any form of official contact between the United States and Taiwan.A little insecure, aren't they?
